Mantle flow, melting, and dehydration of the Iceland mantle plume

چکیده
Recent studies have shown that the extraction of water from the mantle due to partial melting beneath mid-ocean ridges may increase the viscosity of the residuum by 2–3 orders of magnitude. We examine this rheological effect on mantle flow and melting of a ridge-centered mantle plume using three-dimensional numerical models. Results indicate that the viscosity increase associated with dehydration prevents buoyancy forces from contributing significantly to plume upwelling above the dry solidus. Consequently, upwelling in the primary melting zone is driven passively by plate spreading and melt production rates are substantially lower than predicted by models that do not include the rheological effect of dehydration. Predictions of along-axis crustal thickness, bathymetric, and gravity variations are shown to be consistent with observations at Iceland and along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Furthermore, these predictions result from a model of a plume with relatively high excess temperature (180oC) and narrow radius (100 km) — properties that are consistent with estimates previously inferred from geochemical and seismological observations. Calculations of incompatible trace-element concentrations suggest that observed along-axis geochemical anomalies primarily reflect incompatible element heterogeneity of the plume source. 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Dynamics of mantle flow and melting at a ridge-centered hotspot: Iceland and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
The dynamics of mantle flow and melting of a ridge-centered plume were investigated with three-dimensional variable-viscosity numerical models, focusing on three buoyancy sources: temperature, melt depletion, and melt retention. The width, W, to which a plume spreads along a ridge axis, depends on plume volume flux, Q, full spreading rate, U, buoyancy number, B, and ambientrplume viscosity cont...
متن کاملPrimitive off-rift basalts from Iceland and Jan Mayen: Os-isotopic evidence for a mantle source containing enriched subcontinental lithosphere
New measurements of Os, He, Sr and Nd isotopes, along with major and trace elements, are presented for basalts from the three volcanic flank zones in Iceland and from Jan Mayen Island. The Os/Os ratios in lavas with <30 ppt Os (n = 4) are elevated compared to ratios in coexisting olivine and appear to be contaminated at a shallow level. The Os/Os ratios in the remaining lavas with >30 ppt Os (n...
متن کاملRayleigh-Taylor Instabilities from Hydrous Melting Propel "Cold Plumes" at Subduction Zones
It is commonly thought hot diapiric flows prevail in the mantle wedge above the subducting slab. However, hydration and partial melting along the slab can create a situation in which a Rayleigh-Taylor instability can develop at the top of a cold subducting slab. We have modelled numerically with a high-resolution 2-D regional model this parodoxically interesting geological phenomenon in which r...
متن کاملMantle plume tomography
We review the resolution currently available with seismic tomography, in particular the ability of seismic waves to image mantle plumes, and discuss frequently asked questions about artifacts, interpretation and possible systematic errors. These aspects are discussed in more detail for two case histories offering different problems in the tomographic interpretation: Iceland and Hawaii. Regional...
متن کاملThe influence of mantle melting on the evolution of Mars
We present a parameterized convection model of Mars by incorporating a new heat-flow scaling law for stagnant-lid convection, to better understand how the evolution of Mars may be affected by mantle melting. Melting in the mantle during convection leads to the formation of a compositionally buoyant lithosphere, which may also be intrinsically more viscous by dehydration. The consequences of the...
